Back Street is a pre-Code drama film directed by John M. Stahl, starring Irene Dunne and John Boles. The movie is based on Fannie Hurst’s best-selling novel of the same name. It tells the poignant story of Ray Schmidt, a woman who becomes the lifelong secret mistress of a wealthy married man, Walter Saxel. Despite their deep love for each other, Ray’s devotion to Walter relegates her to the “back streets” of his life, as she sacrifices her own happiness and opportunities for a conventional life.
