A Song Is Born is a musical comedy directed by Howard Hawks. The film stars Danny Kaye as Professor Hobart Frisbee, a mild-mannered musicologist working with a group of fellow academics to compile a comprehensive musical encyclopedia. Their secluded world is turned upside down when they discover the vibrant world of contemporary music genres like swing, jive, and bebop, thanks to two window washers.
The plot thickens when nightclub singer Honey Swanson, played by Virginia Mayo, seeks refuge in their institution to hide from the police investigating her gangster boyfriend, Tony Crow. As Honey introduces the professors to the latest music trends, Professor Frisbee finds himself falling for her, leading to a series of comedic and romantic entanglements.
The film features an impressive lineup of musical legends, including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, and Lionel Hampton, who all play themselves. It’s a delightful blend of romance, comedy, and music, making it a classic of its time.
