Johnny Belinda is a drama film directed by Anthony Page. The story revolves around Belinda McAdam, a young deaf-mute woman living in a poverty-stricken rural community. Played by Rosanna Arquette, Belinda is misunderstood and mistreated by those around her, including her harsh father.
The plot takes a turn when Bill Richmond (Richard Thomas), a Vista worker, arrives in the community. He discovers that Belinda is not mentally handicapped as everyone believes, but rather deaf. Bill befriends Belinda and helps her communicate, leading to a tentative romance. However, their relationship faces a severe challenge when Belinda is assaulted by the local bully, played by Dennis Quaid.
This film is a remake of the 1948 movie of the same name and is based on a 1940 Broadway play. It is known for its emotional depth and compelling performances, particularly by Rosanna Arquette.
